A living treasure of Azerbaijani music, Alim Qasimov has become one of the most important artists of the mugam tradition.
At the age of 19, he decided to pursue a career in music, completing his education at the Asaf Zeynalli Music School (1978–1982) and the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Fine Arts (1982–1989), becoming a student of the renowned mugam master Aghakhan (Ağahan) Abdullayev.
Alim Qasimov first made a name for himself in 1988 when he won an award at the International Traditional Music Festival and Symposium in Samarkand. In 1999, he was awarded the UNESCO Music Prize by the International Music Council.
Since 1995, he has been performing on stage with his daughter and student, Fargana Qasimova. The Alim Qasimov and Fargana Qasimov Ensemble will perform at CSO Ada Ankara on December 13.
